Being disconnected from the electronic world was not as bad as I thought it was. It was actually peaceful not being on my phone, I was more aware of my surroundings and it gave me a lot of time to relax and reflect. I was actually able to study without being distracted, however it was very hard to study without using my computer and powerpoints. Not having my phone or electronics helped me focus and actually retain the information I was reading. I found myself getting board at times so I did take a walk as a study break. The last thing I noticed was that I felt really disconnected from my loved ones. I normally text or talk to my fiancé most of the day, so not being able to talk to him was very hard. Other than that it was not too hard to accomplish, and is a possible request. I thought it was a good assignment to allow us to see how heavily we rely on technology and that taking a day to step back from it can be beneficial.

Clinicals

So far clinical is going well. Even though we had a rough start at the beginning by not having a code, I think we have come a long way. I just finished my first med pass this past week and it went well. My goals for this clinical is to become more comfortable with medications. This is something that still intimidates me, even if it is only on one patient. I want to be able to be confident in passing meds to more than one patient, and feel organized and ready.

Gentamicin

Gentamicin has a faster absorption rate when it is given by IM injection, IV administration or by topical agents. It is very poorly absorbed orally. It is excreted through the kidneys at >90% unchanged, which makes it very toxic to the kidneys. It is excreted through the kidneys at >90% unchanged, which makes it very toxic to the kidneys. Specifically gentamicin causes nephrotoxicity, so if there is renal impairment dose adjustments need to be changed, and blood levels need to be monitored to insure nephrotoxicity is not taking place. Other nursing considerations should be to look out for other nephrotoxic drugs when administering gentamicin, since the incidence may be raised in combination with these types of drugs. Also patients taking this medication should be well hydrated in order to help counteract the nephrotoxic factors.

Picture & Electrolytes

My favorite electrolyte is Sodium because it has easy values to remember and you always know what it follows (water!). My least favorite electrolyte is probably between phosphate and magnesium just because I don’t really know much about them and they are not recognized as much as the others. The photo I chose highlights my […]

My 2 favorite things!

The photo I chose highlights my two favorite or most loved things. My Fiancé and Disneyland.
